Memorial Day weekend was a big one for us: Nathan took his Step 1 exam on Saturday, and on Sunday, we celebrated our first anniversary! Since his test was in Louisville, we stayed with my parents and enjoyed visiting with them before heading out of town for a celebratory trip.

Mom fixed an amazing “last supper” for Nathan before his test: scallops, steak, strawberry romaine salad, sweet potatoes and grilled vegetables. All enjoyed out on the deck, of course!

Not to mention she got him a chocolate cake from Sweet Stuff Bakery – our favorite! Luckily it was a “good luck” cake and not a celebration cake, so we got to have some the night before the test 🙂

Nathan’s testing day couldn’t have gone more smoothly. We loaded him up with protein bars and Boosts plus five-hour energy drinks. He said he felt focused and strong the whole way through!

I was SO excited when I picked him up and he had a smile on his face.

It wasn’t long after he finished that he had a nice cold one (or two) in his hand to toast the end of Step 1 at last!

After some dessert back home and a good night’s sleep, our anniversary began with a delicious brunch on the deck with my parents. Mom made three quiches and mimosas and we really enjoyed just talking and reflecting on the last year. It was a great start to a wonderful week together!

The weather couldn’t have been better as we headed out of town to our first destination for the week: Gatlinburg! Stay tuned for more about our trip in the Smoky Mountains 🙂
