Getting to Gatlinburg was smooth sailing for us. We enjoyed sunny skies and clear roads for the most part. We made on stop on the way for some bourbon – Knob Creek – courtesy of Alison and Luke! They gave Nathan gorgeous bourbon glasses for his birthday and some money for nice bourbon. He’d saved it for after Step 1, and our trip was the perfect chance to enjoy it 🙂
By the time we arrived at our cabin, it was 6pm and we were starving. While we had planned on a nice dinner out for our anniversary, we ended up eating sandwiches and trail mix at the cabin so we could avoid the traffic and crowds downtown. We hadn’t been there for more than five minutes before we spotted bears though! It was so cool!
We ate on the deck with beautiful views. It was actually perfect and just what we needed.
The cabin was so gorgeous and great for us! There was a big deck with a table and hottub, then inside there were two Jacuzzis and two king sized beds. We felt like royalty for the week! Plus having a kitchen and living area were great to spread out and relax. We never wanted to leave!
The evening of our first anniversary was spent opening presents. I gave Nathan a collection of our letters to each other, photos and journal entries from our first year of dating.
His present to me absolutely blew me away and yes, brought me to tears. He wrote to my favorite authors for months, asking for encouragement and advice for my writing. It was unbelievable. Their letters were incredible, but the gesture alone was the most touching thing in the world. Best present of all time and one that will keep on giving in the years to come!
We wrapped up the night with our wedding cake top layer. It was amazingly delicious, especially considering it’s been frozen for a year! We enjoyed a piece that night and a few more throughout the week. It was a sweet ending to a perfect first year 🙂
On our first full day there, we started out with a hike. We’d heard good things about Chimney Tops and it totally lived up to our expectations. The views were astounding! It made hiking up 1500 feet well worth it when we got glimpses of the mountains like this.
The hike wore us out, which worked out perfectly for the massage I had booked for us that day. We got an in-cabin couples’ massage that was absolutely the best one we’ve ever had. It felt so good after hiking and driving so much! We felt brand new after they left.
We had dinner at a sub-par Mexican restaurant downtown which left us both feeling a little queasy, so we laid low the rest of the night. Either way, it was a great first day!
