A couple weeks ago, Nathan and I were fortunate enough to get both sets of parents together for a day at Huber’s Farm & Orchard in Starlight, Indiana. I grew up going to Huber’s as a kid (see photo below), and Nathan and I went the summer we were dating. We couldn’t wait to take Don and Joanne there too!
Unfortunately, we had rainy skies all day, but we still made the most of it! We hit up the market first and loaded up on apple butter and baked goods. We each got a fresh pumpkin donut, too – the smell coming from the fryer was intoxicating, so we had to give in!
Next, we went to the winery to do a tasting. It was a lot of fun, and I ran into quite a few people from different stages of my life – IU, high school, radio internships, Indy – it was quite the reunion! I was proud to get to introduce those people to Nathan and both sets of parents, too. I have some pretty cool people in my life!
Next, I dragged those cool people out to a pumpkin patch in the rain. if you ever want to feel loved, watch a whole group of people agree to get on a tractor and go stand in mud while you run around like crazy trying to find the perfect pumpkin. That’s about how it went on Saturday, but I couldn’t keep the smile off my face! Getting a pumpkin from the field was my big mission of the day, so having a light break in the rain to go do it made me so happy.
After working up an appetite hunting down our pumpkins, we had dinner at the restaurant. You can’t go to Huber’s and NOT try their famous country style cooking… fried biscuits and apple butter, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken and dumplings…the plates were endless and it was amazing. I think we all left in a bit of a food coma, but it was worth it!
Altogether, it was one of the best days of the season. Nathan and I both spent the next day gushing about how much fun we had with everyone and how nice it was to spend that quality time together. We’re hoping it’s one of many family days like that to come – perhaps a fall tradition!
