The first week of January found us on another plane flight together, this time to Houston! We had planned this trip months ago after Nathan got his residency interview scheduled there, and my parents were going to be in town too. It was great having this trip to look forward to after all of the holiday festivities ended. It was nice knowing we had some good family time lined up!
Nathan and I stayed with Ali and Luke for the weekend and got in on Friday night. They always make us feel so at home, and this time was no exception. We had a great time hanging out that night just the four of us – well, five, including baby Jack! He is always the star of the show 🙂
On Saturday, Ali and Luke gave us a grand tour of Houston so we could get our bearings for potential residency life. It was super helpful to see where everything was downtown and areas where we might live. Houston is such a cool city, and it helped a ton to be with people who know their way around.
After driving around downtown, we had lunch at Black Walnut Cafe in Rice Village. I’d been before with Ali, but it had been a long time so I was excited to go back! Just as delicious as I remember and a really cool area to be in.
BLACK WALNUT SALAD: Grilled marinated chicken breast, walnuts, Gorgonzola cheese, julienne green apples, house greens, tomato savory dressing, garlic bread
FRENCH DIP: Thinly-sliced roast beef, provolone, sautéed onions, mushrooms, asiago dressing, onion au jus, baguette, fries
Saturday night, Nate and I went out on a date together just the two of us! Mom and Dad babysat Jack so Ali and Luke could go to a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert, and Nate and I took advantage of the time to be together too. We’d never been out on our own in Houston, so it was a great way to experience the city for ourselves and see if we would like being there for residency.
Our destination was Coltivare, a place with their own garden and really good pizza. All the plates are shareable, too – totally our style. We were able to sit outside on their brick patio…only in Houston in January!
Salad: grilled broccoli, pickled kohlrabi, brussels sprouts, walnuts, and croutons
Salumi: n’duja, bruschetta, honey
Pizza: Chicken, prosciutto, fresh tomato, sage, saba, and mozzarella
It was all so good! We loved having the time together and even came home with a couple pieces of pizza to share with the babysitters 🙂
Nathan’s interview begins tonight with a dinner downtown and then tomorrow all day at the hospital, then we’ll be back in Indy for a few days before his LAST interview in Virginia. I think we are both ready for interview season to be over…it’s been a crazy few months but I’m so excited for all that’s to come! Houston certainly has a special place in our hearts, and this was a fun interview to be together for ❤
