Currently: June 2017

Time for another spontaneous edition of what we’re currently loving! These are some of our favorites from June.

Currently reading:

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It’s yet another classic that I have never read (though I have vague fond memories of watching the movie as a kid), so I am finally getting to it this summer. For those who keep up with my book reviews, you know summer is a time when I like to sprinkle in classics as much as possible, and this one certainly fits the bill!

ALSO reading 100 Things to Do in Charlottesville Before You Die. The woman who wrote this is the person who hired me for my job here in Cville, and she gave this book to me as a welcome gift! Needless to say, I have been poring over it to make our bucket list. We’ve already managed to cross a few off, like polo at King Family Vineyards at the City Farmers’ Market. I will definitely be using this book to plan the agenda for my parents’ first visit out here in a couple weeks too 🙂

Currently watching:

House of Cards. Nate and I started season one and watched the entire thing within a week, which is crazy for us! Season two is underway, but with Nate’s intense work schedule, our pace is significantly slower this time around…probably for the best. Ha!

Currently eating:

Burgers! Burgers are one of those classic summer foods for me. I’ll eat them year round, but kind of like watermelon, corn on the cob, or ice cream in a cone, I always enjoy them more when it’s hot out.

We’ve had the chance to try a lot of the restaurants here in our first month, including Citizen Burger Bar on the downtown mall. This was on our list since we first visited Charlottesville, and it was really fun to finally go!

IMG_1332.JPG-1

^I got the Wild Mushroom & Swiss, which comes with swiss cheese, wild mushroom, black onion, citizen sauce (amazing!!), iceberg lettuce, and tomato on a brioche bun. House salad on the side.

Nathan got the Southern (no photo, sorry!), which comes with pimento cheese, bacon, mustard, iceberg lettuce, and tomato on a brioche bun. We shared his fries, but I forgot to snap a photo until there were only a few left on my plate…

IMG_1333.JPG

Hopefully you can still tell how delicious the fries were though! Perfectly salted, seasoned, and crisped.

Citizen Burger Bar is known for using local ingredients (the beef is from Timbercreek), and you order them pink, no pink, or red as opposed to medium/rare/well done. The prices definitely reflect the quality of ingredients, and even though it was delicious, this probably won’t be a regular stop for us. Still glad we got to try it and I’m sure we’ll be back on occasion. We both cleaned our plates and walked home full and happy!

Currently listening:

To the random radio stations here to try to find our favorites. Definitely a work in progress (and slow going) because we don’t spend much time in the car at all anymore. Almost everything is walkable, so on the rare occasion when we are driving, it’s usually not for more than 10 minutes. I’m sure eventually we’ll find some new stations we like though!

*Side note – the channels that get reception here are the same ones as I used to get in my hometown near Louisville – 102.3, 99.7, 98.9, 92.3, etc. I kind of wonder if this has something to do with being almost exactly due east of Louisville? Is that how radio satellites work? Off to Google I go…*

Currently wearing:

Tom’s Stella Wedge Pump in Natural. I got a pair for my birthday and have been putting them to good use with all the dinners and receptions lately! These are super comfortable, which is clutch with all the standing/walking we’ve been doing at the events. I feel like such a grownup to finally have a pair of heels I can tolerate.

Currently laughing at:

This Twitter account. I’ve followed them for a few years and now Nathan is on board too. We spent entirely too much time scrolling through their whole feed one night when we couldn’t go to sleep.

Also this blog. A former co-worker told me about it and he was spot on when he said I would find it funny. Another thing I spent way too much time scrolling through one day and I keep going back!

Currently loving:

Free yoga classes, fresh summer produce, and how simple and settled life feels these days. Summer is my favorite time of year, and as I type this, I’m sitting on our patio sipping ice cold tea and with a mountain in the distance. (Is it appropriate to use #blessed here?) I’m amazed at how smoothly our transition has been, how many friends we’ve already been able to make, how nice our apartment is (the dishwasher actually cleans our dishes – *praise hands*), and how our work lives have started out. God is good and constantly blows me away. I definitely want to soak up every sweet moment this summer…and beyond!

Currently: March 2017 and Oreo Cake Balls Recipe

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost two years since I last posted a “Currently” update, but now seems like as good a time as any to recap what we’ve been up to lately. Better late than never, right? Enjoy!

Currently reading:

my antonia

My Antonia by Willa Cather. It’s my second time reading the book and I am intent on savoring it this time around vs. rushing through it like I did in college.

Currently watching:

Trevor Noah’s Netflix special “Afraid of the Dark.” We first found Trevor Noah during the presidential campaign season when he had funny (but poignant) bits about the candidates. His standup on Netflix was more of the same – hilarious but genius commentary on current events/the world/history/humanity/etc. Highly recommend – he’s extremely talented!

Currently eating:

Birthday/match week treats for Nathan! We had a fun Saturday afternoon date whipping up chocolate dipped coconut macaroons (which are becoming a birthday tradition for him) and Oreo cake balls (recipe below).

Photo Mar 11, 5 14 17 PM
Coconut macaroons! Possibly our best batch yet.
Photo Mar 11, 5 14 06 PM
Oreo cake balls & a few PB Ritz sandwich crackers to use up the leftover white chocolate.

OREO CAKE BALLS

Ingredients:

  • 25-40 Oreos (we just used what we had on hand which was ~25 Oreos)
  • 8 oz. cream cheese (softened)
  • 12 oz. chocolate bark (I used white chocolate and semi-sweet)

Directions:

  1. Crumble the Oreos (this would be a fun job for a kid!).
  2. Add Oreo crumbles and cream cheese to electric mixer.
  3. Mix until well blended.
  4. Shape into ~1-inch balls.
  5. Refrigerate for one hour.
  6. Melt chocolate bark.
  7. Dip balls in chocolate.
  8. Refrigerate to harden.
  9. Serve!

Currently listening:

A variety of podcasts, thanks to my New Year’s resolution. Some recent favorites are How I Built This and Side Hustle.

Currently wearing:

Winter clothes, since, you know, it’s still freezing and snowing here and everything 🙂

Currently laughing at:

The One America sign downtown. They post a new joke every week and I find them perfectly cheesy and hilarious. A couple of their latest jokes:

“Mountains are not just funny. They are hill areas.”

“Dogs cannot run an MRI but catscan.”

Currently loving:

The new hair products I won from my hairstylist in a giveaway on Facebook: Sebastian Thickey Foam and Sebastian Potion 9 Lite. I normally never use any product in my hair (besides shampoo and conditioner) and I’ve been really impressed by the difference they make! I might even start buying them once the free samples run out… maybe 🙂

Currently: April Edition

It’s time for another catch-up post on what we’re currently loving this month. Hope you enjoy!

Currently reading:

book

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. I finally opened this baby up and I have a feeling I’ll be sinking my teeth into it for a long time…It’s one of the classics that’s been on my “need to read” list for awhile, and after I finished Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng, I didn’t have much else that sounded good to me. Prepare for me to be “currently reading” this one for awhile.

Currently watching:

friends

Friends. Are we a decade behind the times? Maybe. Do we care? Not even a little bit. Now that all 10 seasons are on Netflix, we’ve been turning on an episode or two a night. We can’t help but recognize some storylines from How I Met Your Mother being played out, but it’s a funny show nonetheless! I also still like watching The Voice now that it’s in the live elimination rounds, but other than those two shows (and Shark Tank on Fridays), that’s about it for TV in our house.

Currently eating:

To be honest…lots of food from the freezer. We had stockpiled quite a bit over the last few months and recently ran out of room. Oops! We’ve been thawing soups, desserts and all the other stuff currently taking up room in our fridge. While it’s certainly getting a little more manageable, I still have to be careful when I open the door to make sure things won’t fall out so – we still have a long way to go!

2015-03-28 16.07.03

I did make a delicious version of my peanut butter cereal bars earlier this month though…Peanut butter, marshmallow, honey bunches of oats cereal, craisins and coconut. Best. Batch. Ever.

Currently listening:

Nate and I really enjoyed listening to this lecture by Dr. Kent Brantly together. He’d attended the presentation and liked it so much that he was up for listening to it again with me! It’s a message that sticks with you for sure – challenging, encouraging and flat-out amazing.

Currently wearing:

Just casual outfits like you see above. Kidding of course – that was for Aunt Kate’s wedding in late March. But I have enjoyed getting to break out some dresses now that the weather is warming up. It makes getting ready for work SO much easier when I have more options than pants, boots and sweaters!

Currently laughing at:

The state of our couch. I’d post a picture but it might scare you away! Not only is the leather coming off in big patches now (and thus getting trekked all over our house) but earlier this week, we heard a loud pop and suddenly Nathan’s side of the couch deflated a good inch or two. We had a good laugh over that. So, yep – the couch is pretty busted. After looking at the prices of couches online it’s going to hurt having to replace it, but I don’t think we can hold out much longer at this rate! We did have a few good laughs about breaking the couch of course…Ah, these are the days 🙂

Currently loving:

Spring. Every little thing about it.

Currently: March Edition

After a brief hiatus, I’m bringing back the “currently” posts! It just so happens that I had some recents reads and eats to share with you today, so I figured this was a perfect outlook to put them all together. Hope you enjoy!

Currently reading:

yes please

Yes Please by Amy Poehler. This book has been the perfect cure to my winter blues after a long work day. (Thanks Mom and Dad for the mid-winter gift!) I just finished reading it tonight, and I loved getting to read more about Amy’s life, outlook and advice, all delivered with a heavy dose of her signature humor. I won’t be reviewing this book formally on the blog, but I will say that if you need a good laugh or a lighthearted read then this is the book for you!

Currently watching:

The Bachelor! It’s a never-ending guilty pleasure for me and I’m way too invested, but it does help me unwind on Mondays. The season finale is this Monday, so soon enough I’ll have to find something else. We enjoy The Voice, which just started up again, so we’ll probably hop on that soon.

Currently eating:

2015-02-28 13.01.23

Gourmet donuts from General American Donut Co.! This was our first taste but certainly not our last. After Nate had a rough start to his Saturday while I was out of town, I ordered these donuts to be delivered to the house. I think it helped perk him up – either that, or it was just a sugar rush 🙂 The kinds we tried (and he so generously shared once I got back) were: Maple Bacon Bourbon, Coffee & Cream, Salted Caramel, and Creme Brûlée.

Currently listening:

First Riptide and now Mess is Mine…We have been loving Vance Joy lately and this song has been on repeat – either literally or in my head – all week!

Currently wearing:

Entirely too many layers for March, if you ask me… Ah well, what are you gonna do? I’m grateful for my trusty Northface and boots! Hopefully this time next month I’ll have put them up for the season, though. 🙂

The poor sentence structure/grammar/spelling in the last bit of this sign. My dad and I were highly entertained while waiting for a car wash over the weekend. It’s the little things!

These photos of me and my dad dancing at my brother’s show over the weekend. Pure bliss. Miss him so much!

What are some of your current faves? I’d love a book recommendation or some TV shows to get hooked on. As long as this cold weather sticks around, it’s indoor activities for this girl!

Currently: December Edition

It’s time for another edition of currently! Read on to see what’s been hitting the spot for us this holiday season.

Currently reading:

downloadQuiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain

I’m borrowing this book from my mom, and both she AND my sister have read it and highly recommended it. I started craving it myself after the speaker at my staff retreat last week mentioned it and said it was a powerful book. I’m not far along yet but will absolutely be posting a review of it once I finish it!

The Bible – Luke

We are also reading a chapter of Luke each day this Advent season. Usually I will read it aloud on the car ride to work. We both love the discussions this has led to and the peace it gives us starting our day out in the Word! It especially helps us stay mindful each day of what this season is truly about amid all of the other demands on our attention this time of year.

Allll the Christmas movies 🙂

My parents are the coolest, and after I mentioned to my mom that Nathan and I owned zero Christmas movies, they brought us every single holiday movie that I can think of (and love!). From classics like It’s a Wonderful Life to modern favorites like Elf, our stash is stocked! I can’t wait to watch a couple in particular: A Christmas Story and also National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Nathan hasn’t seen either of them before, and I love them, so I am looking forward to being with him the first time he watches!

Currently eating (or wanting to eat):

  • Ina Garten’s Baked Chocolate Pudding
    • One of our friends from church made this for one of our Life Group dinners recently, and it. Was. Life changing. Lucky for me, it even looks doable! I am so looking forward to taking a stab at this recipe. This may take the top spot on my list of favorite desserts – served a la mode, of course 🙂
  • Chicken Tetrazzini
    • My mom had this at one of her girls’ dinners this month, and she emailed me the recipe (a little different than the one linked here). It sounds delicious and my mom assures me that it is easy to make – or rather, hard to mess up – so I am going to give this a try one week for dinner!

Currently listening:

Once again…Papa Tog and Mama Tog pulled through on this one. Along with the Christmas movies, they also brought us Idina Menzel’s Christmas CD. Idina is a broadway actress whom I loved in Wicked, and she most recently played the voice of Elsa in Disney’s Frozen. (Yep, the lady who began the “Let it Go” craze.) Needless to say, her voice is amazing, and it’s so nice having a whole CD of holiday tunes to play this time of year! Thanks Mom and Dad!

Currently wearing:

Nathan is currently wearing NEW glasses! His parents helped us get them for an early Christmas present and he is loving them. He has had extremely cheap glasses for about four years now, so this is a big step up and he already says he can tell a difference! (You can see them in the picture of us at the bottom of this post.)

I am also in the market for some new winter tops. In particular, I have my eye on this cowl neck sweater. How perfectly cozy does that look?!

Currently laughing at:

  • We both cried tears of laughter watching this film of people slipping on ice. If that makes us sound heartless well…you watch it and tell me if you can resist laughing along too! (It’s six minutes long but somehow it just gets funnier and funnier. His laugh is infectious!)
  • This video of a dad scolding his two little sons (who are absolutely covered in paint!) is hilarious – and also incredibly adorable. The way the little boy says “daddy” is so stinkin’ cute!

^This guy and the fact that he wrapped up his third semester of medical school like a total champ on Friday! He has worked tirelessly for the past few months and it paid off during final exams. He did really well and now gets a few weeks before the next round of classes begin. It is much needed and much deserved time away from school!

Time to spill…What are some current favorites for you? I want to hear all about your favorite seasonal treats, songs, movies and anything else you want to share!
